In cosmopolitan 1950s Istanbul, a mother with a troubled past works at a nightclub to reconnect with and help the rebellious daughter she couldn’t raise.

The film tells the story of a wealthy Greek family living a carefree life in Smyrna full of balls, cocktails, operas, and… secret passions. All of this will come to an end by the destructive forces of war, Turkish nationalism, and long-hidden hatred. The living paradise of Smyrna will be suddenly turned into a burning hell!

Inspired by the life of the most prolific Greek female poet and lyricist, Eftihia Papagianopoulou, an extraordinary woman and artist who has created a massive volume of timeless and popular songs. She got married when she was too young and she quickly became a mother of two little girls. She traveled from Smyrna to Greece, with only one little pillow clutched between her arms. 

On board the ship that took her away from her home forever, she decided she would never let life pass her by. She vowed to live on her own terms. Her name means Happiness but destiny made sure she knew very little of it. She challenged death every day of her life, hoping to ward off its cold, ruthless grip.

In 1950s Istanbul, a young boy discovers the spices unique to the cooking of Greeks in the area and shares them with his new peers when his family is made to relocate to Athens.  Along the way, he connects with others through his love of cooking. As an adult, he returns and revisits the places in Istanbul where he learned cooking techniques and other valuable life lessons.

In 1955, a couple of prominent Greek Istanbulites adopt an orphan Greek girl from the town of their origin. They offer her a powerful family name and ensure her devotion. Twelve-year-old Polyxeni is separated from her younger brother. She embarks on a new life and a future that looks bright. She receives an education, comes of age, and falls in love. She has a lust for life, while unsuspicious of the devious plan of annihilation that others are weaving behind her back, targeting her large inheritance.
